When a new user uses blog then it is very important to know
the meaning of some important weblog terms, which are generally
used in working with blogs. Unless you know the meaning of
the popular terms used in the world of blog, you would certainly
face difficulties maneuvering the arena. So let’s discuss
the meaning of some of the widely-used weblog terms.
Blog: Blog is a medium in which an author
writes a journal-style Website with provisions for readers
to respond. These Web logs are becoming quite valuable in
the software community for sharing ideas.
Blogger: A person who writes and post blog
entries is called a Blogger.
RSS: RSS is a standard for publishing regular
updates to web-based content. "RSS" stands for Really
Simple Syndication. Each and every blog has the ability to
syndicate blog articles written in HTML via RSS protocol to
directories, which aggregate RSS feeds, search engines and
personal RSS readers used by quite a large number of people.
To use RSS it is not necessary to get a vivid knowledge, but
requires an online version with the browser, which is free.
Atom: Atom is an XML based file format.
Atom shows a list of weblog or news information, known as
feeds, to become available for syndication. The information
may be viewed as headlines only or it can be headlined with
contents.
Ping: Ping is a protocol that enables one
weblog to send a message to another weblog.
Trackback: Trackback is a remote commenting
system between various blogs. Generally this system is used
when an individual reads an entry in someone’s blog
and chooses to write about that entry in his/her own blog.
When trackback is used, a ping will be sent to the origination
of the post, so the user will know who to be blogged about
his/her blog entry.
Blogroll: A blogroll is a collection of
links to other weblogs that are found on most weblogs. So
Blogrolls are nothing but presentation of connection between
Weblogs. People have a tendency to keep their essential things
in a special way so as to extract them as and when required,
and the solution is Blogroll. A Blog user keeps the required
Blog in a link by creating Blogroll. Thus in other words Blogroll
can be defined as a collection of links to the other weblogs.
Permalink: A permalink is the permanent
identifier to a specific weblog post or article. While working
with blogs it is often encountered that while one day there
may have several entries or posts listed on the homepage of
the blog, on the next day all such posts or entries are gone.
This is mainly due to the frequent updating of the blog. Here
comes the utilization of permalink, which provide an easy
way to capture specific references to posts or articles about
which bloggers are writing.
Aggregator: Aggregator is a weblog program/tool,
which enables a user to read blog or site containing updates
using RSS feeds. Web based aggregator allows weblog user to
sign up for the service and read their feeds online on just
one site. There is no need to download or install any program.
